Philosophy and Economic Justice  - A Common Thread

An online Talk by David Triggs

7.15 - 9pm on 22nd March 2022

In Practical Philosophy we learn that nothing in the gross or subtle worlds (of body or mind) has a separate existence by itself and that all things and events are part of an indivisible whole. The claims we make not only prevent us from realising this ‘wholeness’ but also prevent us from attaining our full potential. We often claim as ‘mine’ things which are provided by mother nature although they do not truly belong to us.

In Economics we learn of similar claims that prevent nations and economic communities from realising their full potential. Man-made arrangements: laws, traditions and customs, have allowed some individuals and groups to claim exclusive control over valuable things that mother nature provides, cost free for everyone. This economic injustice has led to poverty, crime and conflict throughout the world and now, environmental degradation and the climate crisis.

In this talk David will explore this issue and how a reform of our tax system would contribute towards a remedy.

David has studied and tutored philosophy and economics in the school since he joined in 1963. David is currently Honorary President of the Henry George Foundation of Great Britain having been its Chairman from 2003 to 2019. He is also immediate Past President of The International Union for Land Value Taxation and Free Trade where he contributed at a number of United Nations conferences.
