Free Plato Reading Group
The Kingston Plato reading group invite you to join us. Wednesday mornings 10.30-11.30am on zoom; no previous experience necessary. We use the text translated by a member of our school, Dr David Horan, which is freely offered on the web at https://www.platonicfoundation.org/
This group meets most Wednesday mornings during term time. At the time of posting this, the group are reading Plato's Republic Book 2 dialogue.
The group read a section and then pause to discuss the reading and often consider its relevance to life today.
This group is not carrying out an academic study, but rather an education and what Plato might describe as 'realignment for the soul'. It is not necessary to have prior knowledge of Plato.
Plato has a way of speaking directly to the soul rather than to this present earthy mortal existence. As Plato says an unexamined life is not worth living.
A further quote from Plato may help to explain:-
‘Then dialectic and dialectic alone, goes directly to the first Principle and is the only science which does away with hypotheses in order to make her ground secure. The eye of the soul, which is literally buried in an outlandish slough is by her gentle aid lifted upwards; and she uses as handmaids and helpers in the work of conversion, the sciences which we have been discussing.’
Plato provides tools that help make fundamental decisions about how to think, how to act and how to live one's life.
The group all agree that this reading is very inspiring, the soul is indeed lifted. New members are most welcome to join.
